FotoSeptiembre has taken over nearly every gallery in town (and some in Boerne, Fredericksburg, and Austin) and South Flores Arts District is no exception. At Gallista Gallery, photographer Eric Lane presents Art Driven Lives, a series of 40 portraits that “reunite artists with their work.” Many of SA’s “most interesting contemporary artists” are represented, including Rolando Briseño, Franco Mondini-Ruiz, Jane Madrigal, Russell Stephenson, Vanessa Hill, Albert Alvarez, David Zamora Casas, and Raul Castellanos. Adding to the creative mix, Tom E. hosts an open mic poetry reading, DJ Roach spins jazz, conjunto, and soul, and emerging photographer Louis Sanchez presents new work. (6-9pm, Gallista Gallery, 1913 S. Flores, gallista.com). Across the street at SMARTart Project Space, 20 young shutterbugs (ranging in age from 8 to 16) present Captured: Expressions on Identity, made possible by the non-profit organization San Anto Cultural Arts (6-9pm, SMARTart Project Space, 1906 S. Flores, smartsa.org). Next door at One9Zero6 Gallery, filmmaker and photographer Debra Sugerman explores “transitory moments in life” with Transitions, her first exhibition in six years. Melancholy and hope coexist in her projects, the next of which will be a followup to her 2006 film Dear Mr. President, a documentary following five Israeli and Palestinian girls intent on breaking cultural barriers — and meeting W (6-9pm, One9Zero6 Gallery, 1906 S. Flores, 1906gallery.com). Going against the grain, Fl!ght Gallery’s September exhibition has nothing to do with photography. Known for sugary-sweet ceramic kitsch, Wesley Harvey’s Our First Kiss puts a decidedly raunchy spin on dinnerware. In homage to homoerotic illustrator Tom of Finland, Harvey presents functional ceramic pieces adorned with images of muscle-bound leather-daddies caught in the act (7-10pm, Fl!ght Gallery, 1906 S. Flores, turnitoff.tv).
