Write About Love doesn’t immediately grab you in the intimate way you’d expect from Belle and Sebastian, but reflects the group’s growing rock tendencies. “I Want the World to Stop” is the band’s take on Robert Smith, “I Can See Your Future” turns into a study in Stereolab, and “Sunday’s Pretty Icons” plies ’70s soft-rock waters. While these songs move the band into newer sonic space, they do it in a way that bears a deep resemblance to B&S’ earliest work. The palate has changed, the colors are a bit more saturated, but the picture is strikingly familiar on closer inspection. These are classic Belle and Sebastian songs, vignettes treasuring the minutiae of life, among them frustrated office workers; dissatisfied lovers; and pseudo-historical, quasi-mythological discourses on the band itself. For Belle and Sebastian, perhaps the way forward is in re-imagining the past.
