Most bands don’t play their first gig opening for Little Richard, but such was the case with eight-piece garage-soul combo Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears. Since forming in 2007, the band has received nationwide acclaim, including being listed in Esquire’s “Ten Bands Set to Break Out at 2009’s SXSW Festival.” Lewis, who picked up a guitar for the first time while working at an Austin pawn shop, credits James Brown, Howlin’ Wolf, and Lightnin’ Hopkins as influences. In an article about the band, the Austin American Statesman wrote, “If those cats don’t move you … You need a defibrillator.” Also on the bill: Cedric Burnside and Lightnin’ Malcolm, Sheer Khan and the Space Case, and DJ Scuba Gooding Sr. $12-$15, doors at 7:30pm, Sam’s Burger Joint, 330 E Grayson, (210) 223-2830,
