Critic's Pick Release Date: 2010-11-23

At Sandra Bernhard’s poorly attended (I’m extremely disappointed in all but about 150 of you), tailor-made-for Texas show at the Woodlawn this past Friday, the multi-talented diva glanced at the freshly-painted set around her and joked, “Can you believe they’re puttin’ on Annie? I’m sure you’re all gonna be rushing back for that.” True, there probably won’t be quite as many gym queens and gym coaches on the opening night of a Depression-era musical based on Harold Gray’s Little Orphan Annie (a comic strip based on James Whitcomb Riley’s 1885 poem “Little Orphant Annie”), but I’d be willing to bet my bottom dollar that zany characters like outspoken, family-minded Annie (who’s fortunately got eyeballs in theatrical adaptations), demanding and perpetually hungover Miss Hannigan, and the universally-awaited Lieutenant General Oliver “Daddy” Warbucks will draw a crowd that rivals the hard-knock numbers of Ms. Bernhard’s first visit to sleepy San Anto. Trivia: Little Orphan Annie first appeared in the Chicago Tribune in 1924. Optimism during tough times is but one of the themes that makes Annie relevant today. In a way, the Woodlawn, which first opened its doors in 1946, is beating Broadway to the punch: Annie is scheduled to return to Broadway (where it ran for nearly six years after opening in 1977) in 2012. $17-$25, 7:30pm Wed, Nov 24, 7:30pm Fri, Nov 26, 7:30pm Sat, Nov 27, 3pm Sun, Nov 28, the Woodlawn Theatre, 1920 Fredericksburg, (210) 728-1117, woodlawntheatre.com. Runs through through Dec 23.
