While “gnome” might now invoke cutesy images of Amelie and Travelocity commercials, trust that this drums-and-guitar duo has more in common with Mr. Bungle than David the Gnome. Describing Ohio-based mr. Gnome’s eclectic sound, singer Nicole Barille told our sister paper, the Cleveland Scene, “Someone said it was like I ate Cat Power and Björk for dinner.” Other comparisons cite Blonde Redhead, Sonic Youth, Joanna Newsome, and other groups that blur the lines between winsomeness, darkness, and experimentation. Despite being just a twosome, Barille and drummer Sam Meister create a full-bodied sound thanks to ample effects work and demanding drumming. Lyrically, mr. Gnome doesn’t make things any easier. The verses tend toward hazy, fractured observations inspired by the dream state. The unique, willfully off-kilter approach has earned mr. Gnome rave reviews by a typically inured press. The odd couple should fit right in at their San Antonio show in which they play inside an art installation by Sean FitzGibbons. Free, 10pm Sat, Dec 4, LoneStar Studios, 107 Lone Star Blvd, facebook.com/LoneStarStudios.
