Critic's Pick Release Date: 2010-12-01

Since first picking up a clarinet at age 12, Tel Aviv-born Anat Cohen has emerged as a modern champion of the instrument. But as a student at Berklee College of Music, it was Cohen’s ease with the tenor sax that landed her in an eclectic array of bands: klezmer, Brazilian, and Afro-Cuban ensembles, as well as Sherrie Maricle’s all-female big band, Diva Jazz Orchestra. After establishing herself as a promising newcomer on the jazz scene, Cohen released her debut album Place and Time in 2005. Only two years later, Cohen became the first female reed player ? as well as the first Israeli ? to headline the Village Vanguard, receiving rave reviews from publications like the Washington Post, which called her “one of the brightest, most original young instrumentalists in jazz.” In support of 2010’s Benny Goodman-inspired Clarinetwork Live at the Village Vanguard, Cohen, who’s been credited with expanding the vocabulary of jazz “with a distinctive accent of her own,” brings an all-star rhythm section to the Jo Long Theatre for one night only. $31, 6pm, the Carver’s Jo Long Theatre, 226 N Hackberry, thecarver.org, krtu.org, ticketmaster.com.
