Release Date: 2011-01-19
Genre: Recording

The Smith Westerns have youthful indie panache sure to get your loafers twitching, complete with catchy guitar riffs and sweet lyrics. With the softest sounds and a pining chorus (“Weekends are never fun unless you’re around here too ...”), “Weekend” feels ready-made for carefree hippies falling in love, possibly in a smoky haze. The song “Still New,” has an airy feel and (more) youthful brooding lyrics (“I want to tell you, you’re hard to resist”). In “All Die Young,” the remorseful organ chimes alone betray the message: stay young and die pretty. The fuzzy distortion is disingenuous at the beginning of “Dye The World;” what opens with garage rock quickly becomes an untarnished piece of pop memorabilia circa Abbey Road. In youth one feeds on the moment, and the sound of Dye It Blonde is just that: a moment where time (and garage rock) seem to go on forever.
