Critic's Pick Release Date: 2011-02-09

“Works on Paper” features six of the Texas-focused David Shelton Gallery’s artists as a companion to “Texas Draws,” opening this month at McNay Art Museum. The exhibit opening Saturday presents drawings in graphite and ink, but works in collage and cut and sewn paper will also be included. Sara Frantz depicts finely rendered scenes of wind-swept farms and false-front storefronts in her drawings, but includes mobile homes and travel trailers in some pieces that skew commonplace notions of nostalgia for place. Dan Sutherland melds landscape and building forms in abstractions that mix graphic play with illusions of depth, making places that seem to want to escape from the picture plane. Michael Velliquette constructs ornate designs with card stock that is often twisted and folded, abandoning paper’s usually flat form to make layered works that recall jewelry, masks, and pottery. Also on view is work by Kelly O’Connor, Al Souza, and Matthew van Hellen. Free, opening reception 6-8pm, 20626 Stone Oak Pkwy, #202, (210) 481- 5200,, show runs through Mar 12.
