When Paul McCartney says, “We wanted `Cirque du Soleil` to use the original tracks,” and Ringo says, “We gave it to George Martin because George knows our music,” and Yoko says, “George was a totally understandable choice, because he was part of all that,” and when George Harrison’s widow Olivia gives her seal of approval (“`Martin` knows where everything is”), for a fan to object, saying “you don’t mess with the Beatles’ music” or “the Beatles were meant to be heard on mono” is nothing but pseudo-evangelical nonsense. Originally released in 2006 as a companion piece to the Cirque du Soleil’s show of the same name, this new, iTunes-only digital edition includes two “new” tracks (“Fool On The Hill” and “Girl”). This is not simply a “remixed” album; it’s a marvelous reconstruction of the Beatles, what Ringo aptly describes as “enhancing the Beatles.” Not that they needed any, but, as producer Martin says, “They were always looking for different ways to present their music.” Needless to say, the album sounds gorgeous, with the songs merging effortlessly with tracks from one song added to parts of another, and yet everything as we know it is there, and everything works … in a different, magical way. Whether you’re a Beatles’ fan or a newcomer, enjoy the ride and screw the religious right.
