You don’t need me to tell you about Flaco: the multi-Grammy winner is conjunto music’s greatest living legend, and one of the most recognizable roots music figures in the nation. But if he’s the King (and he is), San Antonio-born, -raised, and -based Eva Ybarra is the undisputed Queen. Widely regarded as one of the best female accordionists in the world, she’s been playing since age six and made a name for herself in a world dominated by men. Her skill and capacity for improvisation is endless, and in a better world she would be enjoying superstar status. “She can ... embellish even the simplest melody with fast 16th and 32nd-note chromatic runs and subtle shifts in tempo that are, in my mind, the essence of jazz,” ethnomusicologist Cathy Ragland told the Current. “Maybe Steve Jordan was the Jimi Hendrix of the Tex-Mex accordion, but Eva’s approach can be compared to that of Miles Davis.” Bring chairs and dancing shoes, but no coolers (beer, wine, and soft drinks available onsite). Ybarra’s set begins at 6 p.m., with Flaco taking the stage at 7:30 p.m. Free (reserved seating is $30 for a table of four), 6-8:30pm, Main Plaza, 115 North Main, (210) 225-9800.
