Critic's Pick Release Date: 2011-02-23

Two unrelated events are tempting us to drive 49.1 miles north for a dose of enlightenment courtesy of The Wittliff Collections. On Thursday at 3:30 p.m., playwright/poet/author Nick Flynn, best known for 2004’s Another Bullshit Night in Suck City (based in part on the author meeting his estranged father by chance in a 1980s-era homeless shelter, the memoir has been translated into 13 languages and is in the process of being adapted for a 2012 film starring Robert De Niro), will discuss his works, including 2010’s The Ticking is the Bomb: A Memoir of Bewilderment. Flynn’s reading is followed by a signing and Q&A. On Friday at 6:30 p.m., the Wittliff offers a window into “Immigrant America” (a two-day symposium focused on the history and future of immigration in Texas and the Southwest and the ways in which Hispanic immigration has shaped our society) with the public opening of Bittersweet Harvest: The Bracero Program, a traveling exhibition inspired by the photojournalism of Leonard Nadel. Originally known as the Emergency Farm Labor Program, the Bracero Program (1942-1964) allowed millions of Mexican agricultural workers to cross the border to work in more than half of the states in the U.S. At the reception, University of El Paso’s Kristine Navarro-McElhaney will lead a talk based on Bittersweet Harvest, which pairs Nadel’s photographs with oral histories presented on 15 freestanding banners. Both events are free, but attendees are asked to RSVP by emailing thewittliffcollections@txstate.edu. Nick Flynn Reading + Book Signing + Q&A: 3:30pm Thu, Feb 24; Bittersweet Harvest: The Bracero Program Exhibition Reception + Program: 6:30pm Fri, Feb 25; The Wittliff Collections, Albert B. Alkek Library, 7th floor, Texas State University, 601 University Drive, San Marcos, thewittliffcollections.txstate.edu.
