Critic's Pick Release Date: 2011-03-10

On Saturday, HemisFair becomes a sprawling canvas for hordes of artists experimenting in every imaginable discipline. Modeled after such arts festivals as Paris’ Nuit Blanche, Luminaria (presented by Rackspace, which donated $100,000 to the cause) promises to dazzle with performances on nine stages and site-specific installations overflowing from four curatorial zones: Igniting the Creative Spirit (curated by the Southwest School of Art’s Kathy Armstrong), Discovering Light in its Many Forms (curated by Cindy and Ray Palmer of High Wire Arts), Illuminating our Past and Embracing our Future (curated by Our Lady of the Lake’s Greg Hinojosa and April Atkinson), and Instillation, Infiltration, Infestation (curated by celebrated local artist Chris Sauter). While seeing everything will seem like a futile goal, a trusty map and schedule of events (available for download at will help you plan your attack. A few highlights we don’t plan on missing: Rattletree Marimba (8:55 p.m. on Stage 5), the San Antonio Symphony (11 p.m. on Stage 7), Ballet San Antonio, Ballet Austin, and Kalalaya Indian Performing Arts (11 p.m. on Stage 8), “Writers Light Up the Night” featuring Cary Clack, Bryce Milligan, Carmen Tafolla, Barbara Ras, and Naomi Nye (8:05 p.m. on the Instituto Cultural de Mexico Stage), Buddy Rasmusen Ice Fights (10:05 p.m. in the Yellow Zone), and the electro-pop stylings of Hyperbubble (7 p.m., 8:30 p.m., and 10 p.m. in the Pink Zone). Also: keep your eyes peeled for Gary Sweeney’s “video soap boxes” and be sure to duck into the charming little structures that dot the park, many of which have been treated to an Extreme Makeover: Luminaria Edition. When it’s time to refuel, head for the Institute of Texan Cultures, where some of SA’s trendiest restaurants will feed the masses from food trucks in the parking lot. Free, 6:30pm-midnight, HemisFair Park, 200 S Alamo, (210) 271-2842,
