Lynyrd Skynyrd

Critic's Pick Release Date: 2011-03-10

Although Lynyrd Skynyrd is best known for hits like “Free Bird” and “Sweet Home Alabama,” 1977’s “That Smell” (from the album Street Survivors) has particular resonance. Based on reckless indulgence, a near-fatal car accident, and the odor emitted by sizzling heroin, “That Smell” warns, “tomorrow might not be there for you.” Three days after Street Survivors was released, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, and Cassie Gaines died in a plane crash, halting the group for an entire decade. Since re-forming in 1987 with Van Zant’s younger brother Johnny on vocals, the band has released seven studio albums (including 2009’s God & Guns) and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006. Guitarist Gary Rossington is Lynyrd Skynyrd’s only remaining original member. Trivia: Originally known as “The Noble Five” and “My Backyard,” Lynyrd Skynyrd eventually settled on a name that mocked high-school gym coach Leonard Skinner, who was known to enforce the school’s policy against boys with long hair. $46-$96, 8pm, The Majestic Theatre, 224 E Houston, (210) 226-3333, majesticempire.com, lynyrdskynyrd.com.
