Critic's Pick Release Date: 2011-03-31

Manuel “Manny” Castillo began San Anto Cultural Arts and its famed mural project on the Westside over 15 years ago. He was well suited to the task, being an accomplished painter himself. And though he passed away from cancer two years ago at the age of 40, his work has continued. During his time, the San Anto muralistas painted 36 works for the community. Recently, they completed their 40th massive street painting, and Museo Alameda will celebrate Castillo this Thursday with a party to open the new exhibit, Manuel Castillo: The Painting of a Community. The show features works by Castillo and 16 past and present San Anto muralists who have brightened the Westside with their work since 1996. The roster includes: Valerie Aranda, David Blancas, Ruth Buentello, Jose Cosme, Adriana Garcia, Gerry and Cardee Garcia, Jane Madrigal, Cruz Ortiz, Juan Ramos, Israel Rico, Christian Rodriguez, Mike Roman, Alex Rubio, and Enrico Salinas. Free, 6-10pm, 101 South Santa Rosa, (210) 299-4300, thealameda.org. Exhibit on view till Aug 31.
