Critic's Pick Release Date: 2011-04-07

Moctezuma’s Table: Rolando Briseño’s Mexican and Chicano Tablescapes, is both book and art exhibit. Both were on view last year at SAMA, and have traveled from SA to the Instituto de Mexico in Montreal. Now back in town, the show is being reprised at Galeria Ortiz with 17 of the works on sale. This is collectable stuff. Briseño is in the Corcoran Gallery of Art in D.C., the Brooklyn Museum, and many private collections. Added bonus — you won’t have to pay museum entrance fees to see the work. Briseño was born in SA and lives here still. He’s come to be known for his public art, sometimes with a theatrical bent, having once flipped a statue of our city’s namesake saint on its head. Moctezuma’s Table joins the works of 15 poets, writers, and scholars with Briseño’s “tablescapes” in a meditation on the fellowship of sharing food, sustenance for body and soul. Free, 6-9pm Thu, April 7, Galeria Ortiz Contemporary, 4026 McCullough, (210) 826-8623, galleriaortiz.com. Exhibit on view until May 6.
