Critic's Pick Release Date: 2011-04-14

Jung Hee Mun’s exhibit Proprium Cycle opens Friday at Sala Diaz with an artist’s reception. You may tend to show up fashionably late, but don’t overdo it this time — what is billed as a “viewer participation performance” starts at 8:30 p.m. The artist developed some serious chops at UTSA, and has exhibited her deftly styled visions of contemporary cherubim widely in SA over the last few years. The flying babies on Renaissance ceilings were thought of as divine messengers, their blissed-out gaze seeing something adults are too, well, adult to get. You’ll have to show up on Stieren Street to see where this enigmatic artist is going now, but here’s a hint: It’s not all about her. “It is viewers who complete the story ... and sense my imagery. This is recreation of what I was, what I want to be, and what will be — it is pure fantasy.” Free, 7-11pm, Sala Diaz, 517 Stieren, (210) 852-4492, saladiazart.org. Exhibit on view till May 15.
