Critic's Pick Release Date: 2011-04-14

Hailing from Buenos Aires, Argentina, producer Pedro Canale garnered accolades after the original release of Rodante in 2008. The album, a trance-like mix of electronica and Latin American rhythms, was chosen by NPR as one of the top 10 albums of 2010. Río Arriba, his sophomore effort, mixes legendary folklore hero José Larralde with digital cumbia, and except for a couple of dancefloor moments, it is a nerve-wrecking, repetitive journey that nevertheless captivates you and takes you to places seldom visited. You can find the album on iTunes, but a club setting delivers the full impact of this feast of digital charangos and quenas. Yes, you can dance to it, but Chancha (Canale’s alter ego) goes beyond that: with one foot on Argentina’s shantytown cumbia villera and another one in the Andes, while his soul freely plays on the fields of the Digital God, wherever He/She may be. He’ll share the stage with ZZK Records’ founder El G (his boss), so Chancha better be good. $5-$10, 10pm (call main number for VIP reservations), Club Rain, 516 Brooklyn, (210) 227-7246.
