Critic's Pick Release Date: 2011-04-14

The Esperanza Peace & Justice Center continues its Other, Out, and Beyond: Movement and Struggle film series with two free screenings this weekend. The series, which began in 2006 with Uprooted: Tierra, Gente, y Cultura: Palestinians and Other Occupied Peoples, draws parallels between the United States, Mexico, and the Middle East by focusing on the search for truth and justice in the face of corruption. Annemarie Jacir’s 2008 film Salt of This Sea, which screens in conjunction with the American Association for Palestinian Equal Rights’ Palestine Film Festival, follows a determined woman named Soraya from New York to Israel, where barriers, checkpoints, and holding cells complicate her mission to reclaim her exiled grandfather’s assets. Other, Out, and Beyond continues with Carlos Carerra’s controversial 2009 film El Traspatio (Backyard), which meshes facts with screenwriter Sabina Berman’s fictional take on the femicides that took place in 1996 in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico. Free, donations appreciated; Salt of This Sea: 7pm Fri, Apr 15; El Traspatio: 7pm Sat, Apr 16; Esperanza Peace & Justice Center, 922 San Pedro, (210) 228-0201, esperanzacenter.org.
