Artist Panel: An Evening with Okay Mountain

Posted on Thu, Apr 21, 2011 at 4:00 AM

Critic's Pick Release Date: 2011-04-21

It’s a great handle for the biz, but Okay Mountain is not a country music band. OKMT is an art gallery and Austin-based art collective of 10 who are masters of site-specific projects, like the hewn lumber exercise equipment in New Image Sculpture at the McNay. The wooden beams seem to point to construction details in Marion Koogler McNay’s Spanish Colonial Revival house, the museum’s first building. But funny bits of the sculpture, like the torture rack wheel, might be more than a play on words. In 1492 Columbus sailed the ocean blue, and so did many Moors and Jews. That was the year when Muslims and all non-Christians were ordered to convert to Jesus or beat the road outta Iberia. Business picked up dramatically for international travel agents and the Spanish Inquisition. This Thursday the Okay Mountain artists will give a talk in the McNay’s Chiego Lecture Hall about how and why they do what they do. Their work is brilliant; they likely won’t be boring either. Free, 6:30pm Thu, Apr 21, McNay Art Museum, 6000 North New Braunfels, (210) 824-5368, mcnayart.org. The exhibit is on view till May 8.
