At the Current, we’re big on gardens. Anything that brings people back into community, sparks relationship with the land, and produces needed fresh fruit and veggies (eggs! chickens! goats?!) for our people is a welcome shift. With the dozens of shared neighborhood gardens that have broken ground around the city in past few years, it’s likely you know what’s happening with Green Spaces Alliance. But if you don’t — or if your neighborhood is finally ready to get in on the action — check this coming info meeting on May 4. It’s time to get planting!

Green Spaces Alliance of South Texas will host an informational meeting at 6pm on May 4, 2011, for groups interested in beginning a community garden in San Antonio. The meeting will be held at the Green Spaces offices, 4901 Broadway, Ste. 211 (above Mon Thai). Registration is required as space is limited.

Attending this briefing is the first step in establishing eligibility for start-up funding. Applications will be accepted through October 1, 2011. Additional information about the funding opportunity and application materials are available online at: www.greensatx.org/community-gardens/resources-for-gardeners or simply search “resources for gardeners” at www.greensatx.org.

Topics to be covered include tips for a successful application, membership expectations, eligible start-up costs, and how funds are disbursed. Neighborhood associations, not-for-profit corporations, public institutions, and unincorporated neighbor groups are encouraged to apply. See the program overview online for details about eligibility.

The Kronkosky Charitable Foundation, the Boeing Company Charitable Trust, and Wells Fargo, N.A., have generously provided funding for the creation of seven or more new community gardens in 2011. Green Spaces provides facilitation, some funding, and lots of guidance and support to gardeners.

Please reply to the Community Gardens Program Manager -- angela@greensatx.org -- to ensure a seat at the meeting and sufficient informational materials. Be sure to include the name of your neighborhood and/or affiliated organization. Share this opportunity with others who may be interested in creating and conserving more urban green spaces.

The Community Gardens Network is one of Green Spaces Alliance’s several programs promoting community ecological awareness.
