Critic's Pick Release Date: 2011-04-21

The chance meeting of vocalist Alexis Krauss and guitarist/producer Derek Miller (in a Brazilian restaurant in New York in 2008) sparked a wildly successful collaboration called Sleigh Bells, a band Wikipedia labels as “noise pop.” But Pitchfork’s Ryan Dombal may have said it best when he wrote, “Sleigh Bells sound like hip-hop, pop, hardcore, metal, dance ? but above all else the Brooklyn duo sound like now.” Regardless of the musical box one might try to squeeze them into, Krauss ? known as much for appearing in an advertisement for Nickelodeon Magazine as for her role in the “racially harmonious” teen pop group Rubyblue ? and Miller ? a former guitarist for the experimental post-hardcore band Poison the Well ? have pretty much taken the music world by storm, armed with little more than a drum machine, an electric guitar, a synth, and some great ideas. On Treats, Sleigh Bells’ 2010 full-length debut, the pair charts new territory with 11 distinct tracks that conjure gritty spirits with sounds reminiscent of combat video games, busted ghetto blasters, taunting schoolyard chants, and lots more in between. Also on the bill: Equally-hyped Brazilian “new-ravers” CSS (which stands for Cansei de Ser Sexy, a reference to something uttered by native Texan Beyoncé Knowles, who, at one point claimed she was “tired of being sexy”) and Memphis, Tenn.-based solo act Bosco Delrey, who’s been described — fondly — as a “garbage-can Elvis.” $17.50 in advance, $20 at the door, doors at 8pm, White Rabbit, 2410 N St. Mary’s, (210) 737-2221, sawhiterabbit.com, detourtickets.com.
