Gron's Mobile Foundry

Posted on Wed, May 4, 2011 at 4:00 AM

Critic's Pick Release Date: 2011-05-04

Experience is said to be the foundry of character, but what is a foundry? This Thursday — Cinco de Mayo — you have a rare chance to find out in person at a live iron pour. For $20 you can have your own sculpture made of molten metal by Jack Gron and crew at their mobile foundry, parked conveniently at the Blue Star lot. Gron packs international studio rep, and when he is not melting ore around the country he runs the Art Department at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. While you’re there enjoying music and the sight of burning metal, take a break and catch the shuttle to Blue Star LAB for the opening of “Kind of Undisputed,” with Mat Kubo, Scott Proctor, Tim Schmidt, and Troy Stanley, curated by Techang. More sculpture, yes, but sculpture that bends definitions and is sometimes hands-on (you can play with it). These guys are making some of the hottest stuff; catch them now before the lines form. The LAB space is on Broadway, but the bus will bring you back safely to Blue Star Contemporary in Southtown. Free, 6-9pm, 114 Broadway and 116 Blue Star, off S Alamo St, in the Blue Star Arts Complex, (210) 227-6960,
