Critic's Pick Release Date: 2011-05-18

The Gospel on the Plaza competition — which divides $3,500 between three outstanding adult choir groups — kicks off SA’s annual Soul Food Festival in La Villita’s Maverick Plaza this Friday. Organized by the nonprofit La Villita Heritage Society, the Soul Food Festival has been celebrating South Texas’ African-American heritage and culture with generous helpings of live entertainment and ethnic fare for eleven years and counting. While tasty plates of collard greens, fried fish, BBQ, and peach cobbler will easily hit the spot, high-energy funk/soul headliners 4th Quarter will be on hand to help you work it off. Also: arts, crafts, vendors, and kid-friendly activities. Free (canned food donations benefit the Little Church of La Villita and the San Antonio Food Bank; proceeds benefit the Eastside Boys and Girls Club), 5pm-midnight Fri, May 20; noon-midnight Sat, May 21; Maverick Plaza, La Villita, 418 Villita, lavillitaheritage.com.
