Vote for Lerma's in National Trust Challenge

Lerma’s Nite Club, an endangered San Antonio landmark, has just been selected to participate in the 2011 "This Place Matters" Community Challenge. The legendary conjunto music venue at 1612 North Zarzamora first opened around 1951 and became a Westside institution by staying in continuous operation for more than 60 years. The rotating cast of musicians onstage was consistently top-notch, including conjunto greats like Bene Medina, Eva Ybarra, Henry Zimmerle, Valerio Longoria, and Esteban “Steve” Jordan.

Unfortunately, due to city code violations, the beloved building has been closed since July 2010 and is in need of major structural repairs. A group of community members has banded together to form the Save Lerma's Coalition—the group and owners of the building are currently in the planning stages of a capital improvements fundraising campaign with the help of community supporters and various organizations. Read the Current’s December 2010 news feature on the Save Lerma’s effort here.

In a recent development, Lerma’s Nite Club was chosen from more than 250 applicants to be one of 100 finalists competing for three cash awards from the National Trust for Historic Preservation. To help Lerma’s win this community challenge, go to the Trust's website to cast your vote. Individuals can vote once per email account until 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 30. There is also an active link to vote on the San Antonio Conservation Society’s website.
