As of just a few moments ago, gay men and women will now have the legal right to marry in the state of New York. In a bipartisan vote, the state Senate approved a bill that would grant same-sex couples the same rights as their heterosexual counterparts, making New York the sixth and largest state (plus the District of Columbia) to legalize gay marriage thus far.

Governor Andrew Cuomo has long supported marriage equality, and his work has set a new precedent for gay rights advocacy. In a concerted effort for change, human rights groups and political supporters everywhere joined forces to make this dream a reality. Joe Solmonese, president of the Human Rights Campaign, has said: "There’s no doubt that this was the most unified marriage effort ever. Today's victory is made even sweeter by the fact that organizations were able to rally around a common goal, work hard and deliver a huge win for civil and human rights."

Today is a historic day for LGBTQ communities - not just in New York, but across the country. This is a huge step forward for marriage equality efforts, and it is evidence that we can make a difference. I don't know about you, but personally, I just fell in love with New York all over again.
