Are we flattered? 'SA Magazine' riffs on 'Current' Flavor in new design

Imitation? Flattery? Theft? Simple coincidental reprising? We only wish we were speaking of the repurposing of soundbites on the campaign trail, the retreading of tax pledges, jobs promises, and American can-do-betteredness. Instead we're using our valuable time to talk about San Antonio Magazine. It's funny, you know. Both the weekly Current and monthly SA Mag just passed through the fires of significant redesigns. At the Current, we know the process is grueling and comes only after much wrasslin' and heartburn. Every shift is checked, debated, checked again, complained over. Heck: We've been beating our design ideas around for half a year easy — and across multiple departments. Hopefully readers find our re-tooled pages fresh, easy to read, and visually engaging. SA Mag's certainly are. One page in particular caught our eye, however, and that's the retitled food section (out, apparently: “Dining”; in: “Flavor”). If that name sounds familiar, it may be because we've been publishing a dining magazine under that name annually (and sometimes twice per year) since the early aughts. By far, our most successful Flavor was published late in 2011 with a brilliant black lettering in Bodoni Poster Italic typeface. Bellissimo, we thought fondly to ourselves. Apparently we weren't the only ones. Imagine our surprise when we saw a new Flavor on the scene in copy-cat Tiffany typeface. Check it out. We're sure even the non-design-orientated out there may see more than a shade of inspiration flowing from weekly to monthly direction. But it's all in good fun. Right? Imitation? Flattery? Theft? Simple coincidental reprising? Whatever. We need to get back to work.
