Mayor Julian Castro had one hell of a night Tuesday. Early in the night, damn near everyone had called the race for his man Barack Obama. Castro's twin, Joaquin, was elected to Congress by a wide margin (no surprise there). And voters approved the Mayor's historic city-wide pre-kindergarten initiative, upon which Castro's staked his entire mayoral tenure. With some 95 percent of precincts reporting Tuesday night, Castro's Pre-K 4 SA initiative was ahead 53.45 to 46.55, despite a last gasp of opposition from conservative, Tea Pary, anti-tax groups in the weeks leading up to election day. The plan will aim to offer high-quality, full-day pre-K for thousands of local children by imposing a 1/8 cent sales tax increase, raising the tax to the state maximum of 8.25 percent. Early in the night, with early vote returns showing Pre-K 4 SA ahead by a razor thin margin, Castro cautiously celebrated with supporters downtown before heading to a party to celebrate with twin Joaquin. See Castro's comments in the video below:
