The Castro twins have become quite the hot commodity on the national media circuit since last month's election underscored the importance of the Hispanic vote. Appearing on the Charlie Rose show last night, the San Antonio wunderkinds decided to dive into the choppy waters of the gun control debate.

Both Mayor Julián Castro and Congressman-elect Joaquín Castro told Rose the upcoming Congress needs to consider tighter gun restrictions in order to prevent tragic shootings like that at Sandy Hook Elementary School last week. In addition to re-enacting the assault weapons ban, the Castros say Congress needs to fix the gun-show loophole and that states should knock down so-called Stand Your Ground laws. Joaquín Castro lamented how gun control has “become kind of a third rail issue in America,” saying the debate is now “skewed towards paranoia.” “It's imperative that the next Congress act on this issue,” he said. “I do think we can be more nuanced about what types of guns” Americans have the right to own. Julián Castro told Rose the Constitutional right to gun ownership, like freedom of speech, comes with reasonable limitations and restrictions. “I think renewing the assault weapons ban, closing the gun-show loophole is very reasonable,” he said.
