Bonehead Quote of the Week: State Board of Education Candidate On Texas Secession

Posted By on Fri, Jan 3, 2014 at 1:01 PM

While he (self-admittedly) has no authority to do so, a candidate for Texas State Board of Education recently vowed to support Texas secession.

Dave Mundy, a Republican SBOE candidate from District 3— an area that encompasses several counties, including parts of Bexar and Hidalgo— signed a pledge with the Texas Nationalist Movement that advocates for Texas exiting from the United States and existing as an independent nation, according to Burnt Orange Report. From Dave Mundy for Texas Board of Education Facebook page, found below:

"Although the State Board of Education has no legislative authority outside the realm of public education, I believe the future of Texas will be as an independent nation. I fully support and defend the Constitution of the United States, but believe that independence is inevitable if Texans are to retain their freedom."

While Mundy, at least, recognizes as board of education member he isn't actually granted power to secede from the nation, getting wrapped up in Texas secession fever (and some subsequent progressive/liberal bashing) doesn't exactly help improve public education in any way— but it does help beef up his conservative stance. With Mundy, we can expect a member ready to delve into classic SBOE right-wing culture warrior battles— a distraction Texas education advocates have been decrying for years.

Mundy faces no primary challenger but will go head-to-head with incumbent Democrat Marisa Perez of San Antonio — who has vocalized concern with the conservative leadership on the board—and Libertarian Steve Hernandez later this year.
