Bonehead Quote of the Week: U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert On Marriage Equality Rulings

Posted By on Fri, Jan 17, 2014 at 11:54 AM

With the battle for same-sex marriage waging across the country, some politicians aren't doing a stellar job of veiling their homophobia. When asked if any of the elected representatives wished to comment on the marriage equality debate during conservative think tank Heritage Foundation's Conversations with Conservatives event, Republican U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert, sitting on a panel alongside Rep. Steve King (IA) and Michele Bachmann (MN), threw in his two cents.

Gohmert criticized how some courts have not found any biological evidence showing that marriage should be strictly between a man and a woman, reported The Raw Story

“They need some basic plumbing lessons,” he said. “This is a state issue....For one omnipotent, omniscious, ubiquitous federal judge who is wise beyond his education to say — to make such a declaration about the law, I think, requires revisiting by each state and compliance with the U.S. Supreme Court.”

Gohmert went on to slam federal judges of essentially having a God complex when ruling in favor of marriage equality. Gohmert, a right-wing rep known for inflammatory anti-LGBT remarks– including linking homosexuality to pedophilia and the fall of civilization— is in good company. Anti-LGBT Gov. Rick Perry and the GOP majority in our statehouse have continually passed laws to prevent any recognition of same-sex marriage. However, with pro-gay marriage rulings in red states like Oklahoma, Gohmert and anti-LGBT friends may get a basic lesson in a progress sooner than they thought.
