Bonehead Quote of the Week: Steve Hotze on Marriage Equality

Looks like conservative Republicans in Houston can't handle the recent San Antonio federal court ruling that deemed Texas' ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional and "demeaning." (The case was brought forth by two couples with deep ties to SA, making the ruling especially exciting for LGBT advocates in the Alamo City.) According to H-Town TV station KHOU, Conservative Republicans of Texas president Dr. Steve Hotze blasted Judge Orlando Garcia's decision in a campaign fundraising letter:

“Our Founding Fathers would be furious to find out that the Constitution was being interpreted to allow sodomites to marry,” wrote Hotze.

But the letter, which drew heated controversy, was meant to promote County Republican Party Chairman Jared Woodfill's re-election campaign. Likely trying to distance himself from the inflammatory remarks while still showing off his anti-LGBT colors, Woodfill apparently "wouldn’t talk specifically about Hotze’s choice of words" and instead diverted attention to judicial activism, “The terminology I want attached is this judge has been a liberal activist and he has violated the law of this state," he told the TV station. (Keep in mind, the guy distancing himself from the comments is the lead attorney suing Houston Mayor Annise Parker for greenlighting domestic partner benefits to city employees.)

Now, it's of course hard to say if Hotze's over-the-top comment had anything to do with it, but on primary election night, Woodfill lost his re-election campaign, breaking an unprecedented six consecutive terms as Harris County Republican Party Chair.

He's got to be furious.
