Pride Center SA Finds a New Home

Posted By on Tue, Apr 22, 2014 at 5:26 PM

After searching for a brick-and-mortar home since its inception in 2009, Pride Center SA has recently settled into offices in the Monte Vista neighborhood— a temporary stop in the journey to find permanent digs.

Pride Center gets new digs in Monte Vista.

“The goal is for it to be a permanent space until we raise enough money and start a capital campaign to build or purchase a building,” Richard Farias, board president, tells the Current.

The new spot, located at East Mistletoe and McCullough Avenue, will serve as a centralized hub for meetings with the board, program organizers and the community. Regular office hours begin on May 1 and will serve walk-in visitors seeking health care referrals, information on support, LGBT advocacy groups and local activities.

In 2013, the non-profit leased a space on Fredericksburg Road but soon realized it wasn’t equipped for programming and events and fell out of their lease. While they’ve been on the hunt for their building headquarters, the Center never slowed down its schedule, offering a monthly lineup of events around the city geared toward assisting the LGBT community and its allies. Every third Sunday of the month, the center invites LGBT residents and their parents to ‘Pride Families’ a social and support group and to 'Come OUT SA', held on the first Friday of each month, welcoming the LGBT community to “socialize, exchange ideas, share stories, and build connections.”

“It’s been a long journey for us,” says Farias (who also serves as a Current contributor). “We are really excited about having a physical presence in the community, and in such a great neighborhood. It’s nice to finally have a place to call home.”

The Pride Center plans to host a grand opening celebration on June 7 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the office parking lot. Snacks, refreshments and live music will be provided.

Pride Center office hours: Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.; Thursdays from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturdays 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
