This screen shot is from the Texas Comptroller's office and reflects data collected from Texas school districts on school construction costs.

In response to public information requests from Texas Comptroller Susan Combs, school districts all across Texas submitted construction costs for new schools built between 2007 and 2013.

And San Antonio school districts were at the top of the list when it came to the amount of money spent on new schools.

Northside, Northeast, Judson, Southwest, South San Antonio, San Antonio, Southside, Fort Sam Houston and East Central independent schools districts spent more than a billion dollars on new facilities.

That number reflects inflation and was adjusted by staffers in Combs’ office, who determined that San Antonio averaged $166 per square foot for 68 campuses.

Northside Independent School District built the most new schools with 23 facilities for a couple hundred thousand more than $616 million.

The most expensive schools built by Northside ISD were William J. Brennan High School, which cost nearly $88.5 million, and Louis D. Brandeis High School, which cost $70.7 million.

Northeast ISD, which built six new schools, spent $70.3 million on its most expensive addition, Johnson High School. And Judson ISD, which also built six new schools, spent $97.1 million on Judson High School.

According to Combs’ report, secondary schools – high schools – had the highest construction cost.

While San Antonio averaged $166 per square foot, the most expensive in the state, Dallas-Fort Worth was close behind with an average of $161 per square foot, and it built the most new campuses with 200. The Houston area was the least expensive, which accounted for 169 new campuses at an average cost per square foot of $135.
