Less than a week after announcing she'd be running to replace Leticia Van de Putte in the Texas Senate, former Bexar County tax assessor Sylvia Romo told the San Antonio Express-News and Houston Chronicle that she's out of the race.

Two days announcing her candidacy, she admitted she doesn't live in the Senate district she'd be representing.  According to the Secretary of State, candidates for state senator must live in the district for which they're running at least 12 months prior to the election date. Romo said last week that she planned to challenge the state law, but didn't acknowledge that in the press statement she released today:

"I have reassessed my candidacy for SD 26 with friends, relatives, and legal counsel," she said in the statement. "As a result of the exigent timeline and the practicality of pursuing the campaign, I have decided to allow the democratic process to continue without my name on the ballot."

State Reps.Trey Martinez Fischer and Jose Menendez, two San Antonio Democrats, and Converse, Texas, Mayor Al Suarez, remain in the race to replace Van de Putte.

Gov. Rick Perry has scheduled the special election to fill the seat for Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2015. Early voting begins December 29.
