Cpl. Chris Carter, the University of Incarnate Word police officer who shot student Cameron Reedus in an off-campus incident in 2013, has resigned his position, the San Antonio Express-News reports.

According to a university spokesperson, Carter tendered his resignation on December 10. The officer vacated his position a little over a year after killing Reedus at the Treehouse Apartments in Alamo Heights. Carter pulled Reedus over for swerving and claims there was a physical altercation. He shot Reedus five times, including once in the back.

Carter and UIW are facing a wrongful death civil suit filed by Reedus' family. The suit was sent back to state court in November, against the wishes of the university. UIW attorneys claimed the case had civil rights elements, but a federal judge ruled that his court had no jurisdiction. The decision pleased the plaintiffs, who originally filed the suit in state court last May. According to spokesperson Mark Hall, the Reedus family was not notified by UIW of Carter's resignation. They found out when news broke in the media Wednesday.

In addition to civil consequences, Carter may also be facing criminal charges. District Attorney Nico LaHood told KSAT 12 last month that he will examine the case and make a decision weather or not to bring the case to a grand jury to seek an indictment.
