A 43-year-old immigrant from Somalia was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for providing support to a terrorist organization and making a false statement to immigration officials.

Abdinassir Mohamud Ibrahim pleaded guilty in July and was sentenced Thursday.

According to the United States Attorney's Office, Ibrahim sent emails to al-Shabaab — a terrorist organization in Somalia — and sent a cash payment to a known member of the organization between May 18 2010 and January 31, 2014.

As for the immigration matter, Ibrahim lied on his naturalization application and on his request for refugee status, claiming to be a member of a persecuted minority clan in Somalia. He was actually a member of the majority clan, which persecuted the minority clan.

"Protecting Americans from the threat of terrorism both at home and abroad is the highest priority of this office, and today's sentencing is yet another victory in that fight," Christopher Combs, the FBI agent in charge of the case, said in a press release.
