San Antonio City Council have been mulling City Charter changes for awhile now and have been holding a series of public meetings this month on those changes. Included in the proposed changes is a pay raise for City Council and Mayor Ivy Taylor. The increase in compensation would be effective July 1, if approved by voters in May.

As it stands, council members are paid $20 a meeting with compensation (for public service) capped at $1,040 per year. The mayor currently makes $3,000 in addition to $20 per meeting.

The proposal sets council member pay at $45,722 and set the mayor's compensation to $61,725.

These folks do work hard and spend long hours responding to residents and shaping city policy, but is the proposal reasonable?

You can voice your opinion at Charter Review Commission meetings that take place every Friday at 2 p.m. through February 27, and public meetings will be held at 6 p.m. on February 11, 18 and 25.

Visit the City Council website to sign up to speak. Residents can also sign up at Council Chambers between 4 and 6 p.m. to be heard. You can also provide input by emailing Charter at or by calling Assistant City Attorney Camila Kunau at (210) 207-5602.
