Oscar Diaz, a San Antonio boxer and former welterweight title holder, passed away Thursday due to complications from a brain injury he sustained in the ring in July, 2008. He was 32.

Known as "El Torito" to boxing fans, Diaz collapsed in the ring during the 11th round in a bout against Delvin Rodriquez at the former Municipal Auditorium. The match was nationally televised on ESPN-2, but was cut off after Diaz let out a scream and fell to the mat. He underwent surgery to reduce swelling in his brain at University Hospital and fell into a two month-long coma. You can read the Current's account of that fateful night here.

Following his coma, Diaz was moved to a rehabilitation facility but was in and out of the hospital over the years, according the KSAT12. The Bexar County Medical Examiner's Death confirmed the cause of death to the news station.

Diaz made his professional boxing debut in 2001. Funeral arrangements are pending.
