The Big Give just got bigger.

The one-day online fundraising event for local nonprofits and charitable groups is gearing up for its second annual campaign on May 5.

The goal when the project launched last year was to raise was $1 million, but at the end of the day, $2.1 million was collected through more than 20,000 donations. Proceeds went to benefit 467 charitable organizations.

If that was good, organizers are pledging this year will be great. Numbers are expected to double.

At a rally on Tuesday that drew 500 people to the steps of City Hall, organizers said 883 area nonprofits will take part and the the goal is to raise $4 million.

While last year only Bexar County agencies could participate, this year the eligibility area has expanded to 12 surrounding counties.

Scott McAnich, executive director of the San Antonio Nonprofit Council and Big Give SA's director, said cash prices will range from $500 to $10,000, depending on how much individual nonprofits help raise.

"By adding a level of competition to the event, it makes the whole day more fun and it drives donors to help their favorite charities win more money," McAninch said.

And though showing community involvement is always a good thing, the point is actually to see how much cities across the country value their local nonprofits.

"This nationwide day of giving is about education as much as raising money," according to Haley Lamm, assistant director of Give Local America, the parent organization for the national Big Give event. "It's a chance for communities to see how much they rely on and benefit from nonprofit organizations."
