San Antonio B-Cycle has a new leader.

In a press release, the city announced JD Simpson, the former director of operations for Austin B-Cycle, will serve as the executive director of San Antonio Bike Share, the nonprofit that operates B-Cycle in the Alamo City.

"I'm excited to work with the City of San Antonio, board of directors and our partners to move San Antonio BCycle forward,” Simpson said in a press release. “Our top priority is to serve the community by providing residents and visitors alike with best-in-class alternative transportation.”

Simpson will report to the city's chief sustainability officer Doug Melnick and work with the newly formed San Antonio Bike Share board of directors.

“We are thrilled to have someone with JD’s experience and passion in the role of Executive Director and I look forward to working with her in this next phase of BCycle’s service to the community,” Melnick said in a press release.

Simpson's hiring comes on the heels of former executive director Cindi Snell's retirement last spring. At the time, Snell cited concerns about funding because San Antonio B-Cycle lacked a major corporate sponsor. Since then, the city allotted more than $100,000 in funding for the nonprofit through hotel and occupancy taxes and VIA Metropolitan Transit voted to explore ways to partner with the organization.

Since September, the city says B-Cycle has logged nearly 340,000 trips.
