San Antonio didn't fare well in a study by the financial website WalletHub looking at the best cities in the country's most 100 populous cities for a healthy lifestyle.

The Alamo City, which wants to be one of the healthiest and most active communities in the nation, ranked 89th.

WalletHub analysts came to their conclusion by comparing U.S. cities across two dozen metrics, including average fitness club fees to the number of swimming pools per capita to parkland acres per capita.

Living an Active Lifestyle in San Antonio (1=Best; 50=Avg.)

27th – Average Monthly Fitness-Club Fee
49th – Number of Sports Clubs per Capita
72nd – % of Residents Who Engage in Any Physical Activity
54th – Number of Swimming Pools per Capita
80th – Number of Baseball Fields per Capita
71st – Number of Basketball Hoops per Capita
45th – Number of Public Golf Courses per Capita
64th – Number of Fitness Centers per Capita
33rd – Number of Parkland Acres per Capita
74th – Walk Score

However, it isn't fair to say San Antonio just isn't trying to be fit. The city is seeing more and more walk-and-bike trails, more linear parks, more exercise-in-the-park-type activities and stronger support for health initiatives from City Hall and from Bexar County.
