Contemporary Art Month Cancels Perennial After Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center Withdraws as Host

The 2016 CAM Perennial is no more.

On Thursday, news broke that the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center decided it wouldn't host the 5th edition of the all-female CAM Perennial because no Latina artist was included.

"The lack of diversity in this year’s group of artists, specifically the lack of representation of Latina artists in this year’s edition of the perennial, has forced the organization to make this difficult decision after much deliberation and dialogue with CAM’s leaders," Guadalupe Executive Director Jerry Ruiz said in a statement.

On Thursday, we were told by CAM board members that we would be updated when, and if, they find a new venue to host the show.

"In lieu of recent events, and in consultation with the curator, a decision has been made to cancel this year’s perennial," the board said in a statement Friday.

Instead, they are arranging a panel discussion during Contemporary Art Month to create a community conversation around diversity and inclusion in contemporary art. The place and time will be announced at a later time.

Throughout the years of our fruitful collaboration, the Perennial shows have been met with critical success and popular acceptance with San Antonio’s diverse artistic community. In all of these years, CAM has applied the same approach to building a show. CAM has supplied an extensive open list of San Antonio artists to an out of town guest curator. Using that list, curators have researched artists and established studios visits throughout the city. With “no-strings-attached” curators have chosen from the visits artists to participate in the Perennial that met their own curatorial narratives as applied to San Antonio’s artistic community. In spite of the lack of rules or quotas, thoughtful curatorial practices have always provided the Perennial with a healthy inclusion of artists from all genders and backgrounds.

CAM invites San Anto artists to add their names to the list provided to visiting curators. You can do that here.
