22 Zika Virus Cases Pending in Bexar County

More people in Bexar County may have contracted the Zika Virus, according to the Metropolitan Health District. Twenty-two people are being investigated for the disease, which is running rampant in Central and South America.

The Centers for Disease Control and Protection have already confirmed that three people have contracted Zika virus in Bexar County. But that number could grow, depending on the test results for the 22 pending cases.

There is no cure for Zika virus, which is carried by mosquitoes. While only one in five people who contract the disease express any symptoms, which include joint pain, fever and a rash. The more serious symptoms are for infants. Birth defects have been reported in children born to women exposed to the virus. It can also be sexually transmitted.

The first case in Bexar County was confirmed in early February. No mosquitoes in Texas have been found to carry the virus.
