CPS Energy Sets One-day Record for Wind Energy Powering San Antonio

CPS Energy reports that 45 percent of San Antonio's daily energy needs on Tuesday were met through wind energy generated from seven contracted farms. 

The utility reports the one-day record is a result of windy spring weather.

“The wind record and decreased coal generation demonstrate the power of having a diverse generation portfolio,” Cris Eugster, EVP and chief generation and strategy officer, says in a blog post. “This diversity gives us the flexibility we need to pivot with our generation choices and make decisions that keep rates steady, which benefit our community in more ways than one.”

An abundance of natural gas and low market prices in Texas also contribute to decreased reliance on coal plants, according to CPS Energy.



In total for 2015, renewable energy sources like wind (11.1 percent), solar (1.1 percent) and natural gas (26.3 percent) made up 41 percent of CPS Energy's portfolio, with nuclear (29.6 percent) and coal (29.2 percent) making up around 58 percent.
