Spurs quarterback Tony Parker turned back the clock in Game 1 against the Grizzlies, showing flashes of his quicksilver speed en route to 15 points and 6 assists in a lopsided playoff win for San Antonio. The dimes pushed Parker to fifth on the NBA’s all- time postseason assist list, passing former league MVPs Steve Nash and Larry Bird.

Prior to tip-off, one of Parker’s recent off-court
assists made the rounds when the trailer to The Birth of a Nation was officially released. Along with former Spurs teammate Michael Finley, Parker was one of the first investors in director Nate Parker’s acclaimed drama. Scheduled for an October 7, release, the film scored the largest distribution deal in the history of the Sundance Film Festival at a reported $17.5 million.

Backed by the familiar strains of Nina Simone’s haunting "
Strange Fruit," the powerful trailer captures the cruelties of the Antebellum South in somber yet defiant tones. While its still early in the game, advance reviews suggest that both Parkers could be adding an Oscar to their mantle.
