Before Shea Serrano was a New York Times bestselling author, a writer for the defunct sports and pop culture site Grantland and creator of the newsletter Basketball and Other Things, the San Antonio native was a middle school teacher.

As most any teacher (or middle schooler, for that matter) could tell you, that's a tough gig. On this week's CurrentCast, Serrano talks about why he decided to teach, and how one of his efforts to connect with the kids ended up. Listen to a clip of that below:

Check back here tomorrow for the rest of the interview, in which Serrano talks about growing up on the South Side, his thoughts on the Spurs' championship chances and yelling at his kids after basketball games (no longer a habit of his).
