San Antonio Police Officer Nathan Becerra was shot Wednesday morning during a confrontation with a robbery suspect in the city's northwest side. He is currently recovering after surgery at the University Hospital's Intensive Care Unit and is expected to survive the bullet to his stomach, according to SAPD Chief William McManus.

Becerra had been called to an Ingram Rd. apartment complex around midnight Tuesday to investigate an alleged robbery. When he showed up, he saw a car he believed was involved in the crime, and "struggled" with the car's driver, according to McManus. That's when a man emerged from the car's backseat and shot at Becerra, hitting him just below his body armor. Becerra managed to shoot back, killing the armed man. SAPD took two other suspects at the scene into custody.

This non-fatal shooting of an officer comes less than a month after SAPD cop Miguel Moreno died at the hands of an armed civilian — who shot him and Officer Julio Cavazos as they exited a car during a routine neighborhood patrol. Cavazos survived the shooting.
