San Antonio drivers may have to sit in traffic for more time than usual this weekend, since I-10 and I-35 will have significant lane closures due to construction, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.

Starting at 9 p.m. on Friday, all main lanes of I-10 at Fair Oaks Parkway will be closed while the old Fair Oaks overpass bridge is demolished.

“While we’ve been able to keep traffic moving pretty well during these closures, drivers should still expect delays,” TxDOT said in a news release. “Previous closures finished fairly quickly — way ahead of projected schedules. Do NOT expect that this weekend.”

Additionally, all main lanes of I-35 at New Braunfels Avenue, near Fort Sam Houston, will be closed starting at 9 p.m. on Friday for the demolition of the New Braunfels Avenue overpass bridge. The news release forewarns that this closure will “hang up traffic quite a bit.”

The road closures are expected to be in effect through the weekend until 5 a.m. on Monday morning. They had originally been planned for August, but had to be postponed for various reasons, including Hurricane Harvey.
