Tim Duncan is notorious for being a man of few words, but San Antonians have been surprised to hear the basketball legend be so vocal in his efforts on behalf of the U.S. Virgin Islands following the worst hurricane season ever.

In a video posted to his 21 USVI Duncan Relief website, Duncan opened up more about life after Hurricane Hugo in 1989. He was just 13 years old, and remembers realizing that the storm was unlike anything he had experienced before. While most hurricane seasons before hadn't left much destruction, he shared details about reconstructing his hometown of St. Croix after Hurricane Hugo.

He said people helped him rebuild the island after Hurricane Hugo, and recognized that the "torch was passed" and that it was his time to do the same.

His relief efforts are doing just that. From partnering with H-E-B to deliver supplies to being on the ground with rebuilding communities on the islands, Duncan is doing more than his part. He's also agreed to match up to 1,000,000 in donations made to his relief fund, which has raised more than $2.7 million. You can still donate here.
