Four days after a 6-year-old boy was fatally shot by Bexar County deputies who were chasing down a wanted felon, members of his community held a remembrance for him at his elementary school.

Students, staff and other members of the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City Independent School District community gathered outside Wiederstein Elementary on the morning of December 26 to blow bubbles during a remembrance for Kameron Prescott, who died on December 22.

Kameron was hit by a bullet fired by a Bexar County Sheriff’s Office deputy during a two-hour long chase, in which deputies were trying to apprehend Amanda Lene Jones, who they believed had stolen a car earlier that day. Jones, who had two felony arrest warrants, allegedly broke into the mobile home where Kameron and two of his family members lived.

According to Sheriff Javier Salazar, the deputies believed Jones was holding a gun. Four of the five deputies opened fire on Jones outside the mobile home, killing her instantly. One of the bullets shot through the mobile home’s wall and fatally wounded Kameron.

Kameron’s grandfather, who is an officer with the San Antonio Police Department, issued a statement on behalf of the family on Christmas Eve, saying “We certainly understand the media’s interest in Kameron’s case, but we are asking for privacy for the entire family and for any SAPD Personnel helping us deal with this already difficult situation.”
